Maudie's Carriage
“If it doesn’t collapse when we pick it up, I’d like it”
So started the journey of our latest renovation project back in October 2013.
An 1880s second class Victorian railway carriage was once used as an air-raid shelter in WWII. Thereafter left in Maudie’s garden providing home to rabbits and occupied by chickens!
Now in our workshop undergoing careful restoration, Maudie’s Carriage will eventually sleep 4 (+ 1 small one).
Update 2025
Maudies Carriage is now situated on our Montagues Farm site. Restoration is in progress! Currently the ancient barn frame that will house the Carriage is being re-constructed piece by piece. When the Ancient Essex Barn originally blew down in 1987 John had the foresight to label each piece and outline them on drawings ready for the day when it could be rebuilt. John and son Ben have been looking forward to this project and are hard at work on construction this summer.
